Definitions

Employee type
This identifies which retirement system applies to you, Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) or Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS).

Percent to contribute
This is the percentage of your annual salary you contribute to your TSP each year. Up to 15 percent of your salary can be contributed to TSP each year.

Annual salary
This is your annual salary before taxes and other benefit deductions. Since your actual contribution and government match are based on your salary and employee type (CSRS or FERS), do not include any income you may receive from sources other than your government employment.

Current TSP balance
The starting balance or current amount you have invested in your TSP.

Age of retirement
Age you wish to retire.

Annual rate of return
The annual rate of return for your TSP account. This calculator assumes that your return is compounded annually and your deposits are made annually.

Expected annual salary increase
The annual rate you expect your salary to increase. This calculator assumes that your salary will continue to increase at this rate until you retire.

Catch-up contribution
If you have made -- or will make -- the maximum amount of regular employee contributions for the year ($15,500 in 2007 and in 2008) and are 50 years of age or older, you may also make catch-up contributions to your TSP account. Catch-up contributions have their own annual limit, which is $5,000 for 2007. The limit remains $5,000 for 2008.

Members of the Uniformed Services may not make catch-up contributions from pay that is tax-exempt; FERS employees do not receive Agency Matching Contributions on catch-up contributions..

Government match
For FERS employees only. This value is calculated based on the percent of your salary you contribute to TSP.
