Courtesy of Relevant Investments, we have additional calculators added to the site. You will find them under the "TSP Calculators" dropdown menu item at the top of the site. If you don't see them...hit your browser's refresh button

I really appreciate the calculators, but I have a question about the Milestone calculator. Does it assume a starting age of 0 or something? I'm 27 and planning on retiring at 60, and it says I'm on track if I have 3x my current salary saved? I've been working just over 4 years and there is little to no possible way to have 3x my current salary (I haven't even had this salary for 6 months) saved....

I'm assuming this calculator is designed for people who are closer to retirement?

The calculator takes the span of time from your current age (27) to your projected retirement age (60), a span of 33 years. What you are telling the calculator is that you want to save enough in 33 years to sustain you for 25+ years.

Change the retirement age to 70 and you will see a significant difference. You have many years before retirement and there are many variables in your life that will unfold over time.

If I built the calculator to simply give you a lump sum goal to shoot for 33 years in the future the number would be so staggering due to inflation you might give up all hope.

The milestone calculator is designed specifically for folks just starting their careers to give milestone goals. A recent promotion will skew the data to some degree until your TSP begins to reflect the increased contributions. But it also should serve as a reminder to consider increasing your TSP contributions upon promotion because you just moved your milestone.

The other retirement savings calculator is for folks closer to retirement where inflation is a bigger consideration post retirement rather than prior to.

flybynight,

When MJ took over ownership of the site, he moved to a new platform. The move did not include the calculators. That's why the links don't work, and why you can't find them here anywhere.

Aitrus, thanks for letting me know. Sorry for the seriously slow reply. I really liked those calendars. Will just go to TSP site and use theirs, I guess.
