Are you talking about the charts on the TSP Returns page? When you change the dates, what date range is shown on the chart graphic itself after you submit?

Thanks

figured it out. Fantastic charts! I also use the TSPmoney.com Fund Returns charts and extend the timeline back to 2006 or 2005 when researching how the funds are acting. While I have you, the concept of the C/F rotation is fascinating. I'm not sure the F is necessarily the correct choice as when the dollar was devaluing the F Fund lost. Have you looked at the G Fund statistics compared to using the F Fund? How about the Lifestyle 2010? Also the way I'm reading the charts, the S Fund is outperforming the C Fund. So why use the C Fund for the 4th quarter? Perhaps it's the size of the index that makes the S outperform the C. And the dudes on Fast Money flip flop between the Large Caps and the Small Caps every other day. But the charts indicate the S is a better choice. Let's see how I do compared to those who chose the C, assuming my early jump into the S (it's so cool to have other smart TSP members sharing what they are doing) recovers and I don't start the 4th quarter below 100k.

Hey crondanet5,

S Fund wasn't chosen because it wasn't available to the TSP investor until 2001. Until that time, only the G, F and C Funds were in play. To drive the point home that a blind buy and hold investment methodology may weaken one's retirement, I wanted to illustrate a strategy from the inception of TSP using real data. While there were periods that using G instead of F would have returned better results, this would have devalued the intent of the back testing since it would be a manipulation of the system to inflate returns. In other words, by using a predefined set of trades that are followed each year regardless of market sentiment, no one should conclude that the back testing of this strategy is bogus (as is the case with many of the professional TSP services out there)

Now, part of the purpose of this site is to attract smarter people than me who will formulate and propose better options than this. I added the C/F swing strategy to the site in hopes that it would create market timing awareness and stimulate discussion.

Thanks for the comments on our historical charts. I'm going to eventually remove the 360 day range limit once I've finished load testing and deal with some tweaks to the charting system to handle larger ranges.

The calculator subtracts the Govt. Contribution from my contribution to equal $15,500. In my account I can contribute $15,500 plus $5,000 TSP Catch-up for $20,500 plus the Govt. Contribution to equal more than $25,500.

Age Salary Contribution Govt Contribution Catch-Up Contribution Total Contribution TSP Balance
52 $101,000 $10,450 $5,050 $5,000 $20,500 $410,940
53 $104,535 $10,273 $5,227 $5,000 $20,500 $465,955
54 $108,194 $10,090 $5,410 $5,000 $20,500 $525,372
55 $111,981 $9,901 $5,599 $5,000 $20,500 $589,541
56 $115,900 $9,705 $5,795 $5,000 $20,500 $658,845

Hi whitty4.

I was under the impression that employee contribution plus government match could not exceed $15,500. Is this not the case?

TSPKing,

It does appear the Whitty4 has made an important discovery!! Previously my understanding was that the matching funds where included in the $15,500 annual limit; however, after further research on the TSP.GOV web site, I realized I was mistaken. I'm not sure how I incorrectly interpreted this; however, this is great news for myself. I thought I had to revise my contributions during my last pay period to avoid exceeding the limit. Now I don't have to and I can continue to increase my contributions after EOY annual pay increases/step increase. Thanks Whitty for pointing this out!! Here are the two fact sheets regarding annual limits and catch-up contributions:

http://www.tsp.gov/forms/oc91-13.pdf

http://www.tsp.gov/forms/oc03-03.pdf

NOTE: ABOVE LINKS APPEARTO TAKE YOU TO MAIN TSP WEB SITE; COPY & PASTE URL IN BROWSWER TO ACCESS THE PDF FILES. :?

It's funny that this is being brought up! Last Friday I warned my older brother that he may have exceeded his contributions or soon will be regarding what I thought was correct. Now, for the worst part, I have to admit that I was incorrect and he was correct. That doesn't happen very often, but when it does, it hurts.

BTW Bro, it appears you can make catch-up contributions at any time as well... I was wrong about that as well.

I guess we learn something new every day

Thanks whitty4 and Pro-Trader for clarifying how this works. I think I have it fixed now

Help, I can't make my second allocation

Post by Rocketeer »

Apparently I only get one voluntary reallocation this month, the month that I joined, because my initial allocation into 100% G counts against my total. This is not what I expected and also frustrates me because I was counting on making that second voluntary allocation today (hopefully the bottom of this bear market). I want to go 40%G 20%C 20%S and 20%I

Can this problem be repaired easily?

Thanks!

I realized this problem recently but haven't got a fix yet. PM me your allocation before 12:15 today and I'll enter it for you.

Un-precidented earnings in the G Fund today

Post by BradTheDad »

Something really strange must be going on, because the report for today earnings show the G Fund at a +2.80 % - for just today!

I'm not complaining, because that is where I currently am, but it usually only accrues 0.01 % per day.

TSP typo, or something else?
Trying for a yearly gain of at least 9 %. Wish me luck !

For 9/19/14 TSP.gov shows share value of G as 14.5272 up .0009 from previous close.

I just reset my Fantasy account today because TSPCenter did not take me out of the S fund until 2 days after I had made my inter-fund transfer. I put my transfer in on the 7th before the cut off time but it did't register till the night of the 8th. All my gains were messed up.
