Fantasy Restart 1Jan09

Post by crondanet5 »

Somehow or other I cannot locate the long discussion about whether or not the game should restart, so here goes: I urge that the game automatically reset every Jan 1st of each year. Many good points have already been made in favor of a restart, but here's a few more to consider:

1. It's a game. Sooner or later it has to end. It's not a matter of who's catching up to who, it's a game. Anyone who played Atari or Activision or WII Mario can tell you they've reset their game many times. So why not this one? We can learn from our mistakes, see how others play it, but reset it and give everybody another time around to do it again, okay?

2. Last year's strategies are not necessarily this year's strategy. So why wait until next November for someone to catch up to a player who sat in the G Fund for all of 2008? It would be a much better learning tool to restart the game and see how things are progressing the tenth trading day of the new year instead of getting bogged down in last year's data.

3. The restart gives everyone a fresh chance to make their fantasy allocation work for them to be out in front. It promotes enthusiasm and gives old players a chance to see what the newbies are doing with their allocations.

4. There may be players who just totally missed the mark and have abandoned all hope of ever catching up to the leaders. Why lose them? Why not restart the game and begin anew, fresh, everyone at the same starting point, and see what happens?

Do you see what I mean? If yes, please take the necessary technical moves to restart the game effective Jan 1st. Thank you for listening, and I hope we passed the audition.

crondanet5,

There really are pros and cons to both scenarios. With that said, I've been thinking about it and I think I may have a solution to make everyone happy

The issue as I see it is the FantasyTSP account balance. For people like me who have lost 30% going into 2009, it is disturbing and demoralizing to log in and see my pathetic balance. I agree that this reason alone will cause people to either quit or abandon accounts and start new ones which leads to another problem of orphaned accounts being tracked that aren't really active.

At the same time, I see the benefit of preserving full account histories (allocations and returns in terms of percent) because I think it is important data that people may want to reference. An example is someone wanting to track multi-year performance.

So, why not just do away with account balances? What is important is account returns, not account balances. This way, the game effectively still starts over on Jan 1, 2009 because we have a brand new YTD for the Leader Board for the 2009 calendar year. 2008 performance will not effect the YTD for 2009 and the daily returns on the Leader Board will quickly represent 2009 returns as time progresses. Remember, YTD for 2009 starts at 0% return on Jan 1, 2009.

I look forward to your response. Thank you for your input, you've made some excellent points in your post

Any other opinions on this option?

My vote is to leave it as is and not reset or change anything. The game starts over continuously depending on which category on the Leader Board you are looking at.

Every 5 days, 15 days, 30 days...calendar weeks, calendar months, calendar years. Why start over? 2009 is a brand new year with its own YTD return just as January is a brand new month with its own month return.

My 2 cents

This request came from another member, but its relevant to this thread.

An option to reset your account has been added to member summary pages.

So if you want to start over, have at it
