Welcome, progradeu! Lot's of knowledgeable people here, so I'm sure you'll get a lot of answers to your question. I'm a ANG guy myself, so I know what the monthly drill rotation lifestyle is like.

As for your question regarding investing choices, there's several to choose from. Buy and hold, technical trading, and seasonal strategies will all make you money if you understand the system and use it wisely. To learn about the latter, see the thread linked in my signature below. For technical trading, I'm sure that somebody here will chime in and point you in a helpful direction.

Depending on your risk tolerance, take a very small percentage of your TSP and follow a seasonal strategy with low amounts of trades per year to learn. :-)

progradeu Welcome dude-man!

You are relatively young, look at the histories of the C,S,I funds and you will notice that the
C fund has intesively climbed since inception year 1988. I am a higher risk dude, so i would tell you to start with investing your hard earned money into C, and watch it grow, with patience of course. Dont over react if it dips down, we call these waves, ride out any dip until you get more than where you started. The great Warren Buffet once replied to a question, of "how did you get so rich?", said " quiet simply, I buy low and sell high!". Which is the same thing you and i do... get into a fund lower than when you come out, and you are guaranteed to make money :)
God Bless.

Well...your not making any money in the "G" Maybe breaking even taking inflation into account.

Your question really can't be answered appropriately with the limited info you gave us.

But, taking the fact that you are considering moving from the "G" to stocks... Yes, get out of "G"

My investment philosophy is simple. I use the S fund as my avenue of investment. I buy the dips and sell the highs (S fund is usually the fund with the most dramatic ups and downs). Most importantly, I never sell for less than I bought.

Do you run into much trouble with the time delay between when making your IFT, and the time your move is actually recorded?
