Every time I feel confident that I understand the logic and method of using TSPCalc along with the invaluable information gained in the forums on TSPCenter, I realize something just ins't clicking with me.
For example, I found strategy 7980 has been referenced in many forums. Do I correctly understand the concept that if the 7980 strategy were followed exactly as detailed in the calendar, the return for 2016 would have been 41.40%? If correct, would that mean that if someone followed the strategy between 2004 and 2016 the average yearly return would be 36.96%? Annual returns like that look great to me but I see many folks using strategies with much lower returns. Is that due to the lower standard deviations associated with lower annual returns and less volatility?
I am trying to find a strategy that is right for me--someone who has 11 years until retirement and is maxing out the contributions each year. I think I can handle a few bumpy years early on but the closer I get to retirement the smoother I want the seas to be.
