Government Shutdown?

Post by evilanne »

So is anyone preparing for a Government Shutdown next week?

The current political vitriol doesn't appear to be impacting the markets.

Our command, mixed military and civs, doesn't seem bothered by it. We actually have a few civs on travel plans during the shutdown, if it were to happen. That would be an odd predictament to be in.

My agency isn't impacted much as we're mostly customer funded. Whether we'd get a paycheck - that is the question, as DFAS processes our payroll. Last shutdown, DFAS determined their payroll dept would stick around and process pay that was earned prior to the shutdown. If a shutdown goes beyond 2 weeks, I'm unsure whether we'd continue to get paid as DFAS may send payroll personnel home.

My agency isn't shutting down; for the most part, we're considered "essential." The Admin Assistant will remain at home but the rest of us will be standing the watch.

We don't shut down at the Veteran's Affairs Department. We report to work like normal.
I am just an average Joe. I have no clue to what the market will do.

FAA shuts down for no man, or ma’am. That’s right, thats a “No Ma’am” reference.

Edit: WOW, watch your spell checker when typing “shuts” everyone!

A government shutdown will only prove the Heritage Foundation's assertion that too many Feds get paid for doing nothing.

We haven’t reacted to any of these in my area. Business as usual... drive forward.

I was thinking the current CRA expired on the 16th but it is the 19th--this Friday when many of the daily strategies are making IFTs. Could be some volatility the next few days but any type of significant pull back seems unlikely--I'm beginning to think that even a government shutdown wouldn't have that much of an impact. Thoughts?

Well, the last shutdown was from 1 - 17 Oct 2013. Below is a screenshot of what the S&P 500 did during that time. It dropped a bit between 7 - 9 Oct, but overall rose 3.07% between COB 30 Sep and COB 17 Oct.

Ugh this sucks. My wife is freaking out as if I just got fired.
Nobody knows what the market is going to do in the future. Stop asking. Just shut up and follow strategy #72033 to glory.
