Wouldn't it be neat...
If our TSP shares were purchased on Mondays instead of Fridays. Given that historically, Friday's have the positive effect and Mondays have the negative effect (https://www.investopedia.com/terms/w/weekendeffect.asp) on share prices. Of course Shiller states that this effect is probably not the case anymore (Irrational Exuberance), but I would love to see a chart how that would have gone over the years. I bet there is a difference over a long period of time.
Enjoy!

I thought shares were purchased close of Thursday price.
OCTOBER: This is one of the peculiarly dangerous months to speculate in stocks in. The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August, and February. - Pudd'nhead Wilson's Calendar

Re: Wouldn't it be neat...
Log into TSP and look at the date the funds are deposited. When I long into TSP my contribution and agency match is dated Thursdays date.
I just logged in and confirmed it's dated 03/08/2018 which is Thursday. That's the day the shares are purchased.

It depends on who you are paid through. Most federal employees are paid through the National Finance Center (NFC) which direct deposit(DD) on Mondays and would buy at close Monday. Some government agencies pay though Department of the Interior which DD on Fridays and buys close of business on Fridays. It varies and depends when your agencies payer DDs.
For this week, those that were officially paid on Friday are seeing an immediate drop in value for TSP today, while those officially paid Today are getting to buy the lower price at close of business.

Aha! That explains why the G fund consistently jumps on Monday. That was a mini-mystery I never understood as one of those whose shares are bought on Friday. Thank you.JDD4J4J wrote:It depends on who you are paid through. I've been wondering about this for a while. I believe that the purchases that are made through my agency are not completed until COB Friday. I've disliked that for quite some time. Mondays are the best.JDD4J4J wrote:It depends on who you are paid through. Sounds like a plan, except for the darn 2 IFT rule. The Board of Directors are idiots.

Mine are usually bought Wednesday.

Is that in our time zone or your time zone?mjedlin66 wrote:Mine are usually bought Wednesday.
The G Fund jumps on Monday due to the extra days. What is interesting is when the month ends on the Saturday, the increase is split between Friday & Monday.
Re: Wouldn't it be neat...
I'm paid through the NFC and my shares are bought on Tuesday evenings after market close.
I follow a monthly seasonal strategy from gclapper (slightly modified). Its moves can be found by searching for strategy number #25727 on http://www.tspcalc.com
