What is PIP and how do I calculate it?

Post by MrSnrub »

According to TSP.gov my Personal Investment Performance (PIP) for the past 12 months ending 1/31/2017 is 17.12%.

The "help" link on the TSP site says:

The rate of return earned by your entire account during the 12-month period ending on the date indicated on your annual statement or on your Account Balance page of the TSP website. The PIP is a time-weighted return that has been calculated using the Modified Dietz method (a method used by many financial institutions and an industry standard). The PIP adjusts for the distorting effects of cash flows into or out of your account. It is an estimate; therefore, your PIP may not be the same as the 12-month performance of the TSP funds, which are time-weighted returns.

...but I am still in the dark. What does a PIP of 17.12% mean? Is that good? How is it calculated?

Your PIP of 17.12% is nothing to sniff at. It shows that you've done well over the past 12 months from 1/31/16 - 1/31/17. The PIP is a time-weighted average.

I found a short vid that goes over how the formula works. In short, it takes into account how your account performed when including the timing of contributions or withdraws. A contribution of $100 early on in the year matters more than $100 paid in later in the year because the first $100 has had more time to grow.

General-how to calculate Rate of Return:
https://www.tsp.gov/PDF/formspubs/oc05-16w.pdf
How you can approximate your rate of return in TSP if you have regular contributions
In your TSP account, if you look at the "Activity Summary" and enter time period 02/01/16 - 1/31/17 Take the [Gain or Loss] divided by [Beginning Balance +(.5 x $ additions)] = RoR% that should be pretty close to your PIP. It may vary slightly due to timing &/or amounts of contributions; it will vary a bit more if your contributions changes significantly during year. Same calculation will work for any period of time. I'm sure you can use the functions in an excel spreadsheet to get more specific but like Aitrus said....you've done well over the last year

Dear MrSnrub,

I just checked my account as well. It shows the PIP to be 18.55%. I don't think it means much other than what was already mentioned. I.e. I think most of us have that high number. If the markets cooperate it will continue to be a nice number.

Enjoy!

Sadly mine was only 5.68, but that's because I was in G for the first half of the last 12 months. It's gone up from depressing 1.77. I wish I had understood TSP sooner instead of wasting my first year and a half in G.

I just started here a month or two ago. I guess I was doing pretty good before that too.

Your Personal Investment Performance (PIP) for the past 12 months ending 01/31/2017 is 20.3%.

Here's to hoping I can keep this number going up.
All in with 7980.

MrSnrub,

One thing I forgot to mention is that your PIP might seem a little off - either high or low. For example, mine for 1/31/17 is 16.63%, but my end of year return for was only 6.28%. Why the difference? It's because Jan 2016 was horrible and put me into the hole by -8.72%. I had to first dig my way out. So my current PIP means that from 1/31/16 to 1/31/17 I made 16.63%, but a bunch of it needed to go towards making up losses.

Make sense?

Its a rather meaningless parameter that varies according to whether the index was at a local max or min at the start of the period. So right now lets say that Jan 2016 was a great month for stocks and you got 7% PIP for the month and then for the year from Jan 01 2016 to Jan 01 2017 (the rest of the year was even steven). Then lets say you make 2% for January 2017, and end up with 2% PIP by the end of January. So even though you had a good month, your PIP dropped from 7% to 2%. Does that really tell you anything? I used to go by the calendar year return but now I don't even look at yearly returns.

Mine was about like yours...20.2%. Good luck.

Somehow my loan is screwing it up. I don't understand. My 12-month return is 21.66% according to tspcenter, but my 12 month PIP is 9%. I don't understand. It must be somehow impacted by the rather large loan I withdrew last March. But I have also paid the loan in full last month so that should semi correct it. Oh well, just kniw that a TSP loan will make your PIP basically a useless number.

Here's what likely happened. Your 12-month return for 2016 was 21.66%. But your 12 month PIP isn't all of 2016. Your current PIP is 1 Feb 16 - 31 Jan 17. This means that your Jan 2016 return was higher than your Jan 2017 return. When your Jan 2017 return replaced your Jan 2016 return, it dragged your PIP down.

For me it was the opposite. My 2016 return was 6.28%, but my current PIP for 1 Feb 16 - 31 Jan 17 is 16.63%. My Jan 2016 return was horrible, but it got replaced by an ok Jan 2017 one.

Arrgh! I have looked at all my quarterly statements and have successfully calculated my PIP for the first nine years of employment. Then 2015 happened and I took out a residential loan to buy a house, and my PIP calculations from 2015-present are all off by several percentage points. I don't get it. Are loans weighted differently than normal contributions? Are they not weighted at all? Urgh! I'm so close!

According to the TSP website, the Personal Investment Performance (PIP) is: "a time-weighted return that has been calculated using the Modified Dietz method (a method used by many financial institutions and an industry standard)."

The formula for the Modified Dietz Method is as follows:

Rate of Return = (EMV - BMV - C)/(BMV + WC)

EMV: Ending Market Value (Ending Balance)
BMV: Beginning Market Value (Beginning Balance)
C: Sum of all cash flows during period
WC: Sum of all time-weighted cashflows

The following table shows my TSP activity for the 2016 calendar year:

Code: Select all

12/31/2016        Ending Balance            $89,854.59

Therefore, the Personal Investment Performance should be:

Code: Select all

PIP = (EMV - BMV - C)/(BMV + WC)
    = ($89,854.59 - $56,052.27 - $26,375.55) / ($56,052.27 + $12,742.39)
    = 7426.77 / 68794.66
    = 0.10795562

So, if I'm calculating 10.795562%, why does it say on the TSP website and on my
quarterly statement that my Personal Investment Performance for the last twelve
months ending 12/31/2016 is 9.87%? This is very frustrating, as I have found no way to determine exactly how the Thrift Savings Plan website comes up with that number. Help!

Re: What is PIP and how do I calculate it?

Post by Aitrus »

How are you calculating the time-weighted cash flows? That might be the culprit. My thought is that since your (EMV-BMV-C) is most likely correct, then your (BMV + WC) should be $75245.90 to reach a result of 0.0987.

Also, we can't see the entirety of the first table - it didn't completely upload, so I can't verify all of your figures.

The weight is equal to the following:

(366 - (# of days between date and 12/31/2015))/366

366 is used because 2016 was a leap year.

And then each time-weighted cash flow is just the weight multiplied by the cash flow.

Code: Select all
