I-Fund Buy and Holders

I-Fund Buy and Holders
Looking at the leader board, it appears that the I-Fund buy and holders are on to something right now. Many of the leaders have been in the I-Fund since the beginning of the year or before. Wonder what they know that we don't?

Re: I-Fund Buy and Holders
The Average for the I Fund is +2.05% for April. And that is good news for everyone that was in it all month. However before Monday the average was down -0.49%, and at one point (April 18) it was down -0.87%.
Some of this feels like the gambler’s mentality. You walk thru a casino, you see someone hitting the jackpot on one of the slot machines. You think why couldn’t that have been me? What you don’t know is how much they lost before this big win. And how much of the winning they will lose before they leave Vegas.
Congratulations to everyone in the stock funds Monday.

Tomany is right! Being in the I fund is not for the faint of heart. I have found myself many times this month fighting the emotional response of "GET OUT!" instead of stay with my strategy.
I am not sure what I am doing yet for May.

This is why the best overall seasonal strategy, gClapper, is sitting in I for April. I thought about bailing, but this shows why you don't play games with your money.

Re: I-Fund Buy and Holders
Looking at the "Top 20", one could make a case that 10 of those accounts are no longer active. 4 accounts haven't changed their allocation since 2015. One account has not changed their allocation since 2011.
The leaderboard is great, but it can be a little mis-leading.

On the contrary, its actually a very good indication that everyone trying to time the market could be wasting their time...no offense towards those that do, just re-stating the facts that Woodbowski's findings show.

I respectfully disagree. Take winner for example (since he replied). Perhaps he can share his thoughts/strategy on why he has decided to stay in the I Fund since June 19 2014. Since then, he still has a negative return. Not sure how that proves a buy and hold strategy either.

Buy and Hold I-Funder since 2015 here.
From 2011-2015 my TSP account allocation/ITFs mirrored what I had on here. I have long forgot why but on 4/27/15 I jumped 100% into I. Not long after it dropped. After some long thoughts I submitted an ITF on my real TSP account and it has been separated ever since. I know a lot of people on here "track" their real account moves. I'm not sure why, if you want to see your performance just log into your TSP account... why not use TSPCenter to test new ideas and theories? /rant
Anyways. The ONLY reason I've held for 2 years is so I can ITF out and not add another negative investment period to my account here. Period. I know, sounds about as ridiculous as people tracking their real TSP account on here It's gotten to the point that I stopped checking my Fantasy account because its been negative for so long, why would it be positive now? I just happened to log in to check my next ITF and low and behold I see this thread, check my YTD return, check the leaderboard and about die laughing #8
Long story short, I follow gClapper's strategy for my TSP account and will be jumping to C in May. As for TSP Center account I'm not sure. I've been thinking about selling as of writing this reply and I should FINALLY be positive after today. Going to check in the morning and ITF my Fantasy account if the morning looks good.
Woodbowski and wdd09 both may be onto something
No clue what I'm doing, but willing to learn.

Re: I-Fund Buy and Holders
Buy and hold is not my type. It used to match my real account, but for several years I haven't login since I concentrate and learn how to profit with OPTIONS for income. I'm waiting for OPM to approve so I can retire and hopefully within a month since I'm under 50 yoa. I'll open IRA account then transfer most of my money after I retire and expect to leave in TSP $15K to $30K just in case TSP have no restrict on withdrawal then I could move some back in at later time (when I don't need to grow as much). I'll transfer 100% ROTH to ROTH IRA since I can keep it grow forever without worry about withdrawal at 70 1/2.
I'll have no problem to earn more than 12% any given year by selling OPTIONS (I have hard time with TSP since it really hard to start by noon and expect to stay the same for closing price and it too risky). I've been generate couple $K monthly and since my TSP balance is more than 25X of my investment account. $12K * 25 = $300K (I don't expect to hit this amount annually, but if I continue with credit spread gain any where between 10% to 100% as most were in the 30% to 40% range with 85% winning rate). I did increase my investment account more than 36% within last quarter of last year and withdrew to pay couple $K on taxes . My balance increase this year more than $15K for almost 4 months. So I should have no problem to generate $60K to $100K without even touch my principal and anything gain above this amount will add to my principal MAX out ROTH IRA then regular IRA.
This is not very good example, but I will use I Fund (EFA) as example of how I generate income base on trading OPTIONS. Today EFA closed at $63.99 so let sell to get credit.
SELL monthly options (3rd Friday of the month) for MARCH 2018 CALL $66 and PUT $59 to collect $4 per contact or 6.7% ($4/$64 that base on 100% margin require for both IRA and ROTH, my investment account usually require 25% to 35% on margin). If EFA trade on 03/16/2018 between $59 to $66 then I keep 100% profit.
Now instead of doing naked as above let do credit spread (one direction either up or down) by SELL MAR $58/BUY $53 to collect around $1 and also SELL $66/BUY $71 to collect another $1.30 (IRON CONDOR for both direction by doing as expect stock not to move out of $58 to $66 range or trading side way).
Between $53 to $58 is $5 and
$66 to $71 is also $5
So the margin on spread is $500 (even for IRON CONDOR). This reduce the risk, reduce the margin and increase profit. Margin reduce from $6,000 per contract (each contract = 100 shares) to $270 ($500 margin - $230 collect from iron condor). Maximum risk is $270 instead of $6,000 with potential return of 85.19% ($230/$270). Trade one way up or down return is 25% to 35% ($100/$400 = 25% or $130/370 = 35%). This example could apply to any stock or ETF on the market that have OPTIONS.

I'm in the I-fund but I'm not a buy and holder. Although I-fund has been a sweet ride for April. (knock on wood). Hope I can ride the month out keeping most of the gains then switch over to C-fund in May.

Another 1% for EFA today. Wonder when it will retreat?
