High 3 vs. High 5

Post by TheWall »

Now that the idiots in Washington are once again trying to screw us by attempting to change the rules of the game, I think we need to start a petition and start calling everyone of them day and night.

If high-5 passes and becomes law, it's gonna really s*ck.

Of all the budget proposals, if the high 3 to high 5 is the only one that passes, I will be okay with that. Rather take this than lose the social security supplement. 8-)

High 5 will have a very significant impact on a FERS annuity. I just ran some scenarios and I did not like the numbers at all.

Care to show those numbers so we get an idea?

I used the below FERS annuity calculator with both a high-3 and a high-5. The results vary based on your expected salary range. I was using from $98,000 up to $108,000 with $2,000 increments per year (high-5) and from $102,000 up to $108,000 per year (high-3).

You can also use the EBIS calculator which is prabably more accurate.

No worries if you can retire this year  I'm expecting if they actually pass this that many eligible to retire will.

You are correct Buckeyedog. And unlike the FERS supplement up to age 62, the change over to a high-5 calculation would affect retirees indefinitely.

Very true as well. Years ago we signed up for this deal and have worked many years towards it. Now they want to change the rules. Sucks all the way around.

Good points. I also feel that the possible high-5 rule is far worse than losing the supplement.

Why should I go out and contact all of my representatives over this? Shouldn't the government be cutting spending? While congressmen tend to be pretty horrible, I don't see how this particular issue makes them all a bunch of idiots. The government does not exist to shower federal employees with never ending benefits. Our country is in trouble and changes need to be made.
