That's because the rest of society has screwed up retirement. How dare government employees think they can get a nice pension!

I'm sure that opinion has had zero political influence and is grounded in factual research.
Re: Federal Retirement Benefits 'Very Generous'
Maybe at one time it was, but now it is a pittance. They told us that FERS was a three legged stool FERS, SS, and TSP. Now they want it to be a 1.5 legged stool.
Re: Federal Retirement Benefits 'Very Generous'
There has been a rash generalization of "Federal Employees" by the media and the general public. There are many reasons why this isn't true, but we'll have to accept for now that this is the reality we have to live with. Unfortunately, we are all painted with the same broad brush. The public believes the stereotype of the bureaucratic, do-little, clock-watching, paper-pushers living off the largess of society. While there are certainly pockets of malaise in EVERY walk of life, the reputation for "Federal Employees" is something that will influence policy decisions.
On a personal note.... my decision to become a Federal Employee was a continuation of my service after retirement from the Army. I look at it as good old, corny service to the Nation that I love and don't really give a crap what brush they paint me with, or what benefits are meted out. I live in the greatest country in the world; If I don't like my situation, I'll use my freedom find something better.

It is the Cross of St. George, the icon for the State of Alabama.

Does this affect those who are retiring in a year or two?

Right now these are only proposals, not legislation. Trump will have a very hard battle to get even a fraction of what he wants. So I wouldn't be too concerned at this point. Anyone retiring in the next few years hopefully won't be affected.

"In total, federal employees with a high school diploma or less earn on average 53 percent more than their counterparts in the private sector, while federal workers with a bachelor’s degree received 21 percent more in compensation."
I wonder how many of those High school diploma or bachelor's only are veterans. I would hazard a guess most of those with only a high school diploma are veterans. Also, a large part of the bachelor's only are also veterans. So any attack on benefits is really an attack on veterans.
I know as a veteran the time I EARNED serving was earned at a rate of of 2.5% towards a pension. I didn't serve long enough to get one and I had to BUY IT BACK for 1.1%. So I already earned it at a higher rate of 2.5% only to have to pay for it again at a lower rate. I also get nothing towards the TSP which is suppose to be part of the three legged retirement system of FERS for that same time.
So really, I had to pay for something I already earned and am also missing a leg of a of the three legged retirement stool.

Re: Federal Retirement Benefits 'Very Generous'
Veterans are 31% of the total "Federal" workforce... In 2016, 623,000 veterans working in civilian federal jobs out of the 2 million federal employees. The DoD as you might expect has a higher percentage, 47 percent of the Department of Defense’s 320,000 civilian employees are veterans.
I thought this number would be higher, but this is what the CBO 2016 report says.

I'm getting nervous. I hope we all get to keep COLA and the supplement. Hubby retires soon and I still have a long while.
