tracking TSP funds...

Post by Thirty3 »

So a lot of us use AGG, SPY, DWCPF, EFA but i've come across some very credible guys who prefer the Vanguard versions BND, VOO, VXF, VEA.

Any comments or suggestions?

The 1st ones you mentioned are the underlying indexes that the TSP (and those vanguard funds) track. So your comparing apples to apples for the most part should be very little difference in end of day % difference.

Me personally I track them all but before I review any other holdings I compare them against the underlying index.

For the S fund I keep an eye on the Russell 2000 (IWM). Backtesting is a little disadvantage, because it's only been around since May, 2000.

In my opinion, EFA is not an effective method of watching the I Fund. The best way that I have found is to check the MSCI EAFE index. The problem with that is that I have not found a method that allows me to put it into a stock app on my phone. I normally check in at https://www.msci.com/ (*EAFE after loading is complete) when I am in the I Fund (two months out of the year). I find that it has always been correct. I would find EFA up and later that night the TSP website would show the I Fund taking a loss.

MSCI EAFE loads on the edge bar on my new Galaxy S8+

Edit: I got a little ahead of myself... It's just the ETF that tracks EAFE

Seems like I fund is very hard to track except for going directly to the TSP.gov site.

Not sure how this would work on your phone, but you can also pull up any daily strategy and compare to individual funds. Look at the graph section, where you can change the time period to a month or insert date for a shorter period.

This one uses onerepmax's mix compared to S & I Funds.
