I fund not in seasonal planning

Post by HazMatt17 »

Is there a reason the I Fund is not used in the seasonal plan? It seems to have pretty solid growth all around.

The I fund is utilized in many of the "daily" seasonal strategies (I'm following 7980, it's in there) and in G-Clappers M3 monthly seasonal. Some people are reluctant to invest in that fund due to it's volatile history, I like that it's part of the strategy I follow.

Which seasonal are you speaking of, HazMatt17? It's used in several of the Monthly seasonal strategies, and I'm sure it's used in a number of the Daily ones as well.

As for the I Fund's performance:

Since 1988: CAGR 4.75%, PNR 69%
Last 20 years: CAGR 3.96%, PNR 65%
Last 10 years: CAGR 1.03%, PNR 60%
Last 5 years: CAGR 6.87%, PNR 60%

I concur, it's in many daily seasonal mixes as well as several very popular monthly seasonal strategies. However, IMO, the reason you don't see much about the I fund in strategies is there hasn't been too much data to support it in such a positive way. If you look at historic data for year end performance, you'll see that last three years in a row it's not gotten over 2.1%, but in 2013 it returned 22.13%. This year it's on a roll but because of the HUGE swings in performance, I feel that when you look at how it can benefit a strategy it's mostly a crap shoot. The other funds tend to have more similar historical values year to year with the exception of recessive years.

I think Timboslice uses it in his plan.

I Fund did well in 2007 & some prior years but generally lagging since the Recession except for 2012 & this year. EU Quantitative Easing appears to be giving it a boost this year but exchange rates still makes actual returns difficult to predict

I think this might just be a case of the id10t functional error. I haven't poked around with the calculator enough to figure everything out.
