Question Regarding Contribution Allocation

Post by PistolPaul »

Hi everyone ....newbie here. I wish I would have known about this site sooner. It's fantastic! I do have a question and apologize in advance if this has already been covered in previous discussions. So whether you are using the seasonal or daily season strategies, which fund should you allocate your contribution to? Are you supposed to follow the fund that the strategy is currently in? For example if you are using strategy 16198 right now you are in S fund, should the contribution go to the S fund as well? Or just keep it simple and always allocate it to one fund and then when it's time to do an IFT move it along with the entire TSP balance to the designated fund? Hope my question makes sense.

Yep.. I move both at the same time. Some guus have their contributions go i to the G and then move them along with everything else at the next scheduled IFT, but I figure in for a penny you know?

I just leave my contributions set to 100% S Fund all the time and when I do an interfund transfer I move 100% to new fund. Using monthly/daily seasonal strategy I am moving once or twice a month anyways, so it doesn't build for long before I'm moving again. Not sure how much of a difference it makes, but it works me. Just call me a slacker.

If you're just starting out and your TSP balance is low, you may want to have all your eggs in the game as soon as possible. Once you build up your balance, the monthly contributions will seem fairly small in comparison so it won't matter if they sit in the G for a few weeks. It also depends on how confident you are with your strategy- all in or hedge your bets.
I personally had contributions go to G and moved things when my strategy called for it.

Your contribution allocation only matters once a month on the first, so those that change their IFT and allocations at the same time several times a month are wasting efforts. You only have to worry about where your money should be per strategy on the first of each month. I personally do 100% G, it'll be earning gains until I pull it to my next IFT. It keeps things simple, and I've never lost money on a bad day on the next trading day :)
