F the F Fund...

Post by mmmmmbeer »

So... if my ciphers are correct... which I think they are close enough for horse shoes and hand grenades anyway....

Wanna see why I'm shying away from the F for now?

Since Sept the F is -2.37%

12 Mo PIP for F... 1.14%

12 Mo PIP for G... 2.34%

No bueno F Fund... no bueno... :(

Very logical approach to an easily justifiable position (though the only one you need to justify your plan to is your other half).

Like you mmmmmbeer the strategy I'm "sortof" following calls for a move to the F fund tomorrow. I'm currently in G and thinking about staying in G and/or a combination of G and S. I'm really not thinking F fund is a wise move right now.
I'm just making this up as I go along.

I was watching this morning on CNBC and Jim Cramer thinks in the short term interest rates and the ten year could actually go down for a short while. Time will tell. If nobody goes to the F fund as the strategies suggest wouldn't that set up nice as a contrarian play? Just asking.

I'm in the 7980 strategy and it calls for the move to F tomorrow. I'm determined to continue to overthink the strategy ignore the move to the F fund... It worked well last month, we'll see how this shakes out. With my real money, I'll be remaining in the S fund until I jump to G fund on 28 February (unless I overthink things again).

The interest rates are set by the Federal Reserve and are due to go up next month but the yield rates will go down, especially if the Fed posts a new higher interest rate.

The Fed selling off it's hoard of bonds will increase the yield rates (and market volatility); this will be an interesting balancing act for the Fed trying to control inflation without killing the economy.

I don't think 2018 will be the same as 2017; I think the years of very low volatility are behind us.

Rising interest rates are generally bad for the bond market. I'd be very wary of going anywhere near the F fund for the foreseeable future.

To play devil's advocate, rates have been on quite a run lately. I could see a short term pullback resulting in some F fund gains. I won't be making that bet but I could at least see it happening lol.

Not to mention that it's not like anyone's about to do a buy & hold of F, it's likely for a short period of time. One of the strategies I look at goes to F for 3 days next week.

Just because the F fund is in a bear market does not mean money cannot be made. Powerful rallies can and do occur. As robika has said we are not buy and hold, just a short time period.
