Any insight on how to buy potential dips? If we are headed for a bear market rather than a temporary correction, it would be nice to use the IFT for a quick 1% bounce in between the side-ward and downward trends.

I understand limiting IFT's during this volatility... however, is this a good time to buy into S/C/I funds and ride them to higher prices (perhaps 1-2 years)??

You're buying the dip, but deferring the return until the fund price moves upward...

Only works if you can predict the bottom or, as Neurontic suggests, sell the bounce. Both are hard and risky.

That's why you don't rely on timing... you set an average purchase price and a target above the average purchase price (e.g., 5% above average price) to sell. If you're socking money into the G fund, isn't that more likely you'll miss the dip?

Thank-you for sharing your thoughts... I'm absolutely not trying to be argumentative... I'm an investing dunce and am just looking for thoughts.

No worries re argumentative, amigo! Price points are good for planning, but it still comes down to timing. If you buy at price X before the bottom, you’re worse off than the person buying at the same price point on the upswing. Of course that will still beat staying in G forever, but OP seems to be warning of 2018 as another 2008.
