Wild Year!!!

Post by PhilJohn »

So I decided to change my strategy. Today is the first day I've been in G this season. I'm really thinking about staying here until I see a significant market drop. I know I will probably will miss out on some gains but I like the idea of being in a position to take advantage instead of being taken advantage of, especially since this Trade War thing might be for real.

I took the February hit and managed to still stay in the positive with some aggressive buying and some luck so far.

Thoughts?

I too, switched to the G fund on Wednesday since I hoped to at least lock in some "gains" after the big drop early on in the week. With the political landscape being so volatile right now I simply feel more comfortable being in G. That being said, I am always looking at various indicators so that I am ready to jump back in if I see a good buying opportunity.

Probably a good choice to move to G. I'd just say keep your eyes open for a change in trend as there's a lot of room to the upside but the trend is clearly downward at this point and I don't think we've hit bottom yet.

Still learning. Some lucky guesses on 3/29 and 4/5 moving funds from C and S, mostly to G. Had nothing in G before the transfers, now 40% G, 15% F, 20% C, 20% S, 5% I. The second IFT on 4/5 was because with all the negative information I'm reading, I thought it would be good to get more money in G and F, then move some or all back to C and S whenever those funds seem to hit a much lower share price.

If the basic idea is to move funds to G (or F and G) when C,S fund prices are high and transfer back to C,S when fund prices are low... do you usually move all your fund or only some? I figured moving some is better so I don't miss out on all gains if C,S go up after the IFT.

So many things going on -- politics, general economy improvements, etc. but I also read that much of the stock buying and selling is computer driven. So my common understanding of what makes things go up and down might just be useless?

It does feel like a wild ride! I just wish I got off in February when we hit the high. To make myself feel better, I look at the total gains over the past 12 months. Still doing good.
Good luck with your TSP and retirement plans!

Yeah, I was on a heater when I was in I-Fund. Was up 5 in like a week and then February came and I was all of a sudden negative for the year. Easy come easy go.

I'm also in G for rest of april. May not be a bad thing with all that's going on, both domestically and international.( Russia, Syria etc.) Seems like the market reacts to every little hiccup.

I think the market is going to make Hugh gains for the rest of April simply based on the fact I'm stuck in G!

You're still allowed 2 IFT's per month, so I'm in G for now during all this turbulence. I plan to go back to C when it hits some significant loses.

We will have to see how the markets react to the Syrian strikes. Today should be international posturing with Sunday time for investors to formulate plans. I'd be hesitant to attribute the timing to avoid immediate market turmoil. It could be possible but I think the need for a more immediate action was more a factor. I'm not going to debate the actual need in the first place.

My guess is that Monday will be a downer with a chance to consider buy opportunities but...then again I could be totally wrong. LOL

If earning keep coming in good, Trump can keep his mouth and tweets quiet, we don’t hear trade talk, Russia doesn’t retaliate in any way, no surprises with the independent counsel, the interest rates and fed stay steady, and most importantly no additional porn stars stories....we just may get some healthy gains in the next two weeks.
