Here’s another strategy

Post by ProduceMan »

I would like to introduce my strategy.

1 - I wait until the gains from the activity page from the TSP website is to my comfort zone.

2 - say my balance is 1000 and 150 of the 1000 are my gains

3 - so that’s 15%. When I request an IFT, I only move 5-10% to the never losing G Fund

4 - so I’m leaving 90 - 95% in the money making funds

5 - then when there’s a nice dip in the C-S-I I IFT back from G

I’ve done this approach from 2012 - present and I haven’t had 1 Bad IFT

ProduceMan, tell me if I have this right:

I have $100,000 in the S-fund, the market does well and a couple of weeks later I have $101,000, a $1,000-dollar gain.

I then move the $1,000 dollar “profits” to the G-Fund.

A couple of weeks go by and now I have $99,000 in the S-fund, I then move the $1,000 in the G-fund back over to the S buying the shares at the lower value (sell high, buy low).

Rinse and repeat.

Well, the end result of that math is you still have $100,000 >>> You're right back where you started.

Rothwell, it depends on the share prices that got you to 100,000 in S Fund. But yes I believe that sounds good, even though you still end up with 100,000 you will have more S shares in the end. Because you locked in the 1000 S Fund value when you IFT’d then gained a little in the G then IFT the 1000+ back in S at a lower price. I think that sounds like a winner winner chicken dinner to me.

Not sure I agree with the strategy of moving money to the G after the CSI has already dipped. That is called selling low and buying high. The name of the game is to achieve the opposite.

None of our statements were real time, just examples. BTW, the examples were selling high and buying low.
