After dealing with the TSP for 29 years, I think this is pretty good advice for someone who doesn't want to think about it too much. The only exception is that I would rebalance the allocation quarterly instead of daily, like the TSP does.

Just pick your target date fund, look up its pie chart on TSP.gov once a quarter, and then match your account to that allocation for both existing funds and contributions. In so doing, you'll be selling the highs and buying the lows, which is pretty much the key to success.

The problem with the G Fund if you believe US will have an economic collapse is that those dollars will be significantly devalued by the resulting hyper-inflation unless you buy into the market near the bottom.

If you believe the US will not exist by the time you retire; then you have much bigger problems than what TSP fund to put your money in.
mo meng, mo ching (which loosely means: no money, no life)

 Instead of investing, I would be putting my extra money in as follows:

1% Wipes - Lavender Scented
2% Water
3% MREs
94% Twinkies

Can you expand on this how does it work for you. Do you just use the CMO I hear some people add a 10 day moving average.

I have tried all kinds of ways to beat the markets. I've joined a paid subscription also and did not beat the buy/hold strategy. On this same website I looked at the current leaders for 2018 and looked at their 2017 returns. If you combined the 2017 and 2018 they would have done better to buy/hold. I'm sure there are plenty of winners but I'm not one of them.

My problem is that I keep forgetting this. Thanks OP for the reminder.

You're welcome scoby! Sounds very a familiar. I also got conned by a broker promising high returns. Thankfully I was able to check his returns over the past five years and look at the buy/sell records. Told him he was full of it and got out 2 months in.

It's a sensitive subject for folks, especially coming to terms with the opportunity costs of missing out on returns. My goal in posting this was to ask members to do a gut check and look to see if they could do better by being aggressive and just leaving things alone.

Update for 8/9/2018:
Currently ranking #188 of #1608, placing me in the top 12%. Pretty cool!

Might be a little lower than that since the leaderboard only looks at recent logins. Other buy and hold folks might be ahead of me.
