Has anyone ever...

Post by Chulke »

Has anyone ever combined a Uniformed and Civilian TSP account before?

I faxed in my request to have mine combined this morning and was wondering how long it will take for them to complete the request?

Like most things government I assume up to 10 business days but you never know right?

I just did it about a month ago. Took less than a work-week. Once catch - if you have an non-taxable pay earned in a combat zone, TSP can't combine that amount with your civilian account. Your only options are to leave it in your Uniformed account, which kind of defeats the purpose of combining accounts, or take delivery into your bank account. It's forever non-taxable so...

To me, it's much easier to manage ONE account that two. Good luck!!

Yeah I knew about the tax-exempt stuff...I have a little in there that's non taxable...less than $200....Might be fun to leave it in there and see how much I can grow it....or maybe I'll just take it out...IDK yet...thanks for the responses everyone!

You have to submit a TSP form 65....Either mail or Fax it in....Also, If you are under CSRS and married your spouse has to sign off on the form and it has to be notarized before you send it in. If you are under FERS, there's no additional step required....just fill it out, sign it and send it in.

So the non-tax exempt portion of my military TSP has been xferred to my civilian TSP account as of last night! Leaving just the tax exempt $$ in the military TSP side....Now to decide whether to play with it and see where it goes or cash out and close that account....hmmmmm....This could be interesting....
