Last questions about Mutual Fund Window

Post by Bubba »

Dear all,

Once again I ask a question for the larger community. I know that many don't use the MFW and I get that. I've been attempting to speak with them, but most of the time, whomever I speak is utterly inept and have no information other than "check the website" which doesn't have any information. Hopefully someone with experience here can answer these questions since nothing is published on the interwebs about these things.

Thanks to all that've attempted to help me in the past.

My best,

Bubba

1. Does the purchase and or sell of a fund constitute a move for the month? So, for example, let's say that I sell mutual fund X on January 3rd and buy fund Y (same fund family) the same day. Does that mean I just made my monthly allotment of 2 moves or is that counted separately from the TSP index funds (G, C, S, etc.)? So, if it's separate, then I could still buy and sell within the TSP during the same timeframe.
2. If I were to sell my holdings of a mutual fund, where does that money go? If I sell my holdings in the C fund for example, then the money must move to another fund or I cannot sell those shares. How does that work in the window?
3. How long must I hold a fund if I purchase that fund before I sell it? For example, would I need to hold the fund for 30 days, 60 days or 90 days before selling? If not, could I buy and sell the mutual funds within the same month?

Looks like a lot is answered here:

https://www.federalregister.gov/documen ... und-window

Sadly, they don't specify what a "regular" holding period is.

"Trading within the mutual fund window will be restricted only by fees and rules that may be imposed by the mutual funds in which participants choose to invest."

It would be great if Thriftline people answered questions...competently.

This TSP mutual fund stuff is about as palatable as a timeshare opportunity

You are right...but...there's a big one too...they offer leveraged funds. Note that trading these is not for everyone (in fact most), but I'm in the process of creating a system that I'm backtesting over a 23 year period. There are the usual caveats, but still some interesting signals. Having said that, the fact that the trading rules are not clear, make my system difficult to recreate. That's why I'm asking if someone has experience on this board to give me some details as the TSP people either refuse or don't know.

Thanks!
