Still in the Military?
Just curious as to how many of you are still either Active Duty, Reserve,or Guard currently?
I did Active Duty Air Force for 4 years, and then separated to then join the Reserves 7 months later. Been in a total of 6 years so far and looking to go the distance to soak up another pension years down the road.

Re: Still in the Military?
16 years total military service. 3 active, 13 Guard. Currently on active. Also, 8 years in FERS.
Re: Still in the Military?
10 years active Air Force, 7 years Air National Guard. Currently in the Civil Service for the Air Force for 7 years, but not connected to my Guard job. Bought back all my AD time for FERS, still have 27 years to go to retirement.

Re: Still in the Military?
6 years active Army, 22 years Army reserve, to include 1 year reactivation for 9-11/Noble Eagle. Gray Area Retired from the reserves in 2010, bought back the active duty time for FERS and looking forward to my FERS MRA in April 2017 with 34.5 years of total service (includes a year of unused sick leave). I still keep my uniformed TSP account and use it to counterbalance my mistakes on the civilian side.

It's pretty good. My only gripe was that since I was a Staff Sgt select and did not sew on Active Duty, I had to re-earn my E-5 which I sew back on in a few weeks...finally.
I'm stationed out of Pittsburgh with the 911 Comm Sq, so I'm RF Transmission. Looking to get into Air Transportation here soon with a re-train. It's def different paced from AD, that's for sure.

I did 5 active and now have over 23 yrs with the guards. Those active years are huge. I am only an E6 but if i retired today and started collecting at 60yrs of age. I would get more $ a month at age 60 then I make at a weekend drill right now. Stick it out you wont be sorry. Something to watch out for i am told is. If your civilian job is federal then you may want to move over to the national gaurd (which is state vrs Reserves being federal) to keep the retirement checks from taking away from each other.

Re: Still in the Military?
The retirements only take away from each other if you take active duty retirement as well as civil service (CSRS or FERS). If you retire from the reserves, i.e. retired pay starts at age 60, then there is no offset.

Re: Still in the Military?
I'm in the Air Force Reserves. Just re-enlisted this past weekend for an additional 6 years and civil service employee for 6 years so far. I'm learning so much about TSP and the fact that we are all here is saying something!! Thank you all for your service!
Re: Still in the Military?
Retired 3 years ago from the Air Force Reserve after 30 years (AFSC 2A300).
Sandquest - there is no offset with reserve & civil service retirement. Guard & Reserve retirements are treated the same.
