Interesting paper. Please everyone note the title of this post says "plan" and not "expect". The subject of morbidity has interested me for a while and I have done several studies on it. And the Prudential ad about 10,000 people a day reaching age 65 and enjoying the first of their "average" 6,000 sunrises must reflect the opinon of their actuarialists about American "average" life expectancy. Lately I have grappled with trying to state the results of my study and personal observations (which includes reading studies like this). Here is one of my attempts to explain what this kind of study means: If a person dies at age 91 and someone else dies at age 71, the average life expectancy was 81, which is what Prudential says is the average. And if someone dies at age 51, 3 people can live to 91 and the average age is still 81. So one can hypothesize that the greater the number of people living beyond age 81, either the greater the number of people dying say, age 71 OR a fewer number dying much earlier to maintain that average age 81 life expectancy. Sorry, don't mean to bore you. Back to the topic. It is still essential in my mind that everyone who has not received a life threatening diagnosis should PLAN to live to 100 because you are probably going to live longer than the average American life expectancy and you don't want to run out of money when you will no doubt most likely require life supporting assistance, right? My concept is to accumulate sufficient capital so your retirement account balance does not drop-- you set it up to yield dividends sufficient to pay your expenses so you never have to reduce the balance. It takes thought, homework, and effort to achieve but I believe it to be a more life sustaining plan than one that simply makes 4% withdrawals until the account is exhausted. IMHO.
