I would describe myself as conservative, but it's been years (1970's) since a dem was worth considering so I up with a Republican ticket because I refuse to yield the field with a throw away vote. I always caucus and vote the primaries to select better people.

I'm very curious as well. I just saw something today saying that the current generational gap between Democrats and Republicans is huge problem for the Republican Party.

You don't think Republican policy is at fault?

Seriously, I think your generational gap theory is interesting but probably not a bad part of the picture. I also think the gender gap is huge too. When a bunch of MEN determine who can and can't speak at congregational hearings and only approve male speakers it really sends a bad signal. Then when some come out and say the stupidest things it seems to say that men always now what is best for women.

Personally, I think the Republican shift on immigration is a direct result of that last 2 presidential elections. They know they are going to get beat in most national and many state level elections on that issue alone.

The schism in the republican/conservative camp is dismaying even to me as a lefty. I believe in the loyal opposition but as the right fractures into 2 maybe 3 major wings (I think libertarians tend to run as republicans) it winds up in a contest of who is the most radical. The right has become the sounding board for the most vocal conspiratorial rhetoric that can be heard. That adds to the fracture lines. Certainly there are factions on the left that are wide but not nearly as well reported (OK...who is going to say the "Lame Stream Media" LOL) and not nearly as inflammatory to the parties the right MUST court if they are going to get into power again. In the end, the conservative factions are doing a better job of "eating their own" than the liberal side.

In short, they need to get the stuff together if they will be a serious contender for elections outside of congressional districts in any state that is in play. If they don't make these moves the only way they can gain the white house consistently is through gerrymandering, state level voter ID laws and other laws designed to suppress the vote. Even after all of that, the backlash could sweep them off the electoral map if executed badly.

I had to vote other. While I may be a registered Republican from back when I was first able to vote, I have voted for a Democrate the past two times. While I may not agree with all of his politics, he was closer to the middle than the Republican side. I still believe we need to vote the noteheads out who want to follow the extrem versus the moderate middle ground that this country needs to get back on track and get things done. The rabid Newt clones have alienated themselves from the bulk of the population. Yes, I agree that the Republican party needs to rethink their approach on immigration if they want to get back into power.

Libertarian for me. Truly I'd like a candidate to be elected that is not part of any organization or group/party. The rivalry of the parties is what is ruining our country. If one of the higher respected members of either party decides they want to submit a bill for vote (such as the different budget bills) their party members basically have to vote for what he says. On the other side the opposing party just due to the nature that they are the opposing party has to vote against it.

If we can get rid of the parties and elect people that will actually make decisions based on the peoples voice that elected them our country will be much better off. Contacting our state senator is pretty much a waste of time now, you end up either getting a blanket response in writing or if you attempt to call them you get basically brushed off by their secretary.

Am registered as an Independent, because I'm a political moderate and do not feel at home with either of the 2 major parties. Over the last 2 decades, both parties have eliminated moderate candidates from their ranks - which is very unfortunate because moderates are critical for working out compromises between the left and right. As a result, Congress is locked in perpetual ideological gridlock and very little gets done.

I have a hatred for politicians and I think neither of the big two political parties have the best interests of America in mind. It's more about gaining power and controlling the money, than actually doing what's right for the people. I do think in some instances the best thing to do is nothing, at least at the Federal level, but there is this notion that "the government should do something" and politicians will continue to promise and fail to deliver. But that's just me.

dems have more latino votes; more female votes; and more youth votes. i predict their lead over the republicans will continue to increase for the foreseeable future.
