Any calculator that takes into account an IRA & TSP/401K?

Post by Timber82 »

Trying to use some of those calculators that tell you what your balance could be with $X at X years at X interest rate.

I am trying to find one that not only looks at 401K/TSP (increases employer match over time with expected salary increase) AND an IRA which would obviously have no match.

Trying to see if I do the max TSP (18K) receiving 5% match with an expected annual increase of 2%. Then I also max the 5.5k in a traditional IRA I would try to do the numbers with varied interest amounts (4%-9%).

I've found many that do one and the other but none that does both, I could just use both and combine them myself but it would be helpful to see this all in one page.

The TSP Projection calculator here on TSPCenter might work for you. To mirror the employer match, use the FERS option under "Employee type". To show what an IRA would do without any matching, select "CSRS". Those folks never got matching, so the calculator doesn't add in the 5% match money.

Another option could be the "How Much Will My Savings Grow?" calculator on tsp.gov. Use "Uniformed Services" or "CSRS" to simulate an IRA that doesn't receive matching money.

How about the TSP Projection calculator like Aitrus said but use the “Catch-up contribution” of $5,500 to simulate your IRA? (If you are not already 50, use 50 as your age or the calculator won’t start the contributions until you turn fifty)
