Shares advance in stair-step fashion, perhaps the healthiest way for a market to rise, if not the most instantly gratifying. Markets like these, with fervent breadth and leadership, usually end up pulling back and heading to new highs, as opposed to topping in a primary sense.

Institutional demand has been good, if not blowout. The January 17-18 sessions were key in this regard.

The backdrop is less important. Shares rise in spite of Europe and despite a Q4 gross domestic product report that showed much of the growth owing to inventory building, not final demand. Europe is far from over as a water-cooler issue.

But shares do not care. And neither should a speculator whose focus is several weeks to several months. Trends like this are made to be played, not fretted over. In our opinion.

The speculative sentiment warms. The small-capitalization segment leads, as do the semis and bios. Recent new issues find favor. Among the names. . . To continue reading, please CLICK
