The neither-here-nor-there market

The big picture is a market that clearly expects a deal in Washington. Last week's takeaway was the market's reaction - or lack thereof - to pessimistic remarks by Boehner.

For example, shares did not blink on Boehner's Thursday comment that no "substantive progress" had been made. This was followed by Sunday's remark that "I would say we're nowhere, period," which caused futures to open just 2.5 points lower Sunday evening.

The basic problem is that the institutional participant sits on his or her hands ahead of the fiscal cliff. And without these market-moving players, the breakouts that one normally sees in leading titles, and the accumulation in more-speculative shares, are simply not there.
