The Brexit is Real

With the Brexit a reality, what will happen? Thoughts? I haven't researched it enough yet, but the market wasn't expecting a Brexit so get ready for some tumultuous times ahead.

I didn't really expect it either, but part of that it probably attributed to my lack of knowledge in European politics. Either way, if I were going to predict. G and F will be the safest options today while things get settled. There will be a lot to be made though once you identify the bottom. I know I will be looking for it by setting indicators for myself and sticking with them.

What's your plan?

I stayed out in both Fantasy and RL TSP accounts. I figured a buy opportunity would occur if it happened. It's just more waiting than anything for the market to determine a bottom.

I stayed out as well... been in the F fund all year dodging the early market fall in JAN and waiting for a black swan to finally land and give us the 10%-20% pull back opportunity the three of us were waiting for to buy in... VIX is up 43% this morning and some markets were showing a 10% decline... can't wait to put this dry powder to work!!!

Question now is - when do we reach for that falling knife???

The big set of questions are:

1. Is this a "singular" kind of event or is this the beginning of a BREXIT style contagion?
2. How long and bumpy will the ride be?
3. If there is one, what is the strategy to get off the roller coaster without panicking? (Maybe not even getting off it is a good option?)

Further down the road...

Is this a template for other kinds of agreements like NAFTA & TPP to be challenged by the electorate of individual counties? If it does, I see the potential for isolationistic politics to become much more influential.

Right, wrong or indifferent; I see this as a binary movement that blends well with a more xenophobic attitude that is trending in many nations.

Already, the rumblings of Scotland independence and N. Ireland desire to remain in the EU are being looked at.

When the tsunami hit Japan 3/11/2011, all talks pointed to a bad economy. Yes, the Dow fell over 300 points in a week. However, it rose back 600 points the next two weeks. Time and tide does not wait.

A new petition to stay in the EU is already circulating in Britain. Leaving is a 2 year process. Plenty of opportunities to make money.

The markets are still in their trading ranges and ended yesterday near the top, so the easy losses are the moves to the bottom of their trading ranges.

Everyone was looking at the bookie odds of the REMAIN rising to high levels this week, so the financial markets moved up. But it seems that 71% of the bets placed were for EXIT and it was a few out-sized bets that moved the bookie odds toward REMAIN and thus move the trillion dollar financial markets so someone could make some real money.

The real fear from the vote is that other countries within the EURO currency will want to exit next. Something about taxation and regulation without representation - the people do not get a vote in the EU system. Americans would have left along time ago...wait we did.

Northern Ireland and Scotland did not like being under England's umbrella, so they liked the EU better than most.

It does seem like it should trigger a change in trend from risk-on to risk-off, but the central banks will fight it.

Well... I wonder which could play out first.

If Ireland and Scotland want to stay in the EU and leave the UK, but the UK vote sparked interest in leaving the EU in other countries. Could they leave the UK for something that starts to unravel. Italy and France are both polling high for a vote 58% and 55% respectively, with a reasonable amount wanting to leave 48% and 41% respectively.

If either vote and the leave ballot wins.... That would be a death nail I'm sure.

On another note...

I use to trade the Euro currency and I found myself staring at the computer screen for a good 10 minutes today. Some people literally made a fortune today and others went bankrupt.

Truly historic times that we likely won't see for another decade.
