Market correction

Post by VJoe571 »

Where can I find a chart with past market corrections? I know soon or later, there will be a market correction. I'm trying to figure out what month would be the most likely one for a correction.

Learning as I go.

I agree with Jethro.

Cant time the market, get in and keep contributing over the course of your lifetime you will be in great position. Pedal to the metal on contributions as market falls, corrects or enters bear market. BUY THE WAVE DOWN, HOLD FOR THE RIDE UP, SELL HIGH & PROTECT PROFITS! RINSE AND REPEAT! Pick up a few books, listen to Conference calls for the big S&P 500 money movers and when expectations are creeping up and growth is slowing down, tread lightly. Its your money set aside 30-45 minutes a few times a week to educate yourself and gain awareness of domestic and local news.

We are in the midst of historic bull run, eventually the party will end ABRUPTLY! I have a feeling it is going to be extremely painful when the swift correction happens because majority of people with money in markets are elderly/close to retirees. Once those folks start to pull money out it will be like dominos. My age group (25-30) is petrified of markets right now because their 38-50 year old parents went through dot com bubble and financial crisis bubble so their advice to their children AVOID THE MARKET AT ALL COST! Be diligent.

A correction can happen any time, but some months have performed better than others historically:
http://www.moneychimp.com/features/monthly_returns.htm

In recent years, most corrections have happened in January and August. While October has been a positive month for stocks overall, it's had the largest corrections (Black Mondays in 1929 and 1987, huge drop in 2008).

Of course, there are many things to consider besides seasonality.

Big corrections are always painful. But even investors who lost big in 2008 would be sitting very nicely now if they just rode it out. Not everyone can afford to do that with all their chips. Retirees or those nearing retirement should have at least 10 years worth of "income" in the G-Fund or equivalent. Leave the rest in play to reap the rewards of the market.
