Turning 26, Health Care Questions

Post by ajareds92 »

So this next may I will be turning 26 and was having a hard time after reading through OPM's website seeing if turning 26 qualifies as a life event. Currently I just pay my parents $25 a month for dental and health insurance so it would be significant savings if I could stick with that for an additional 5 months versus signing up at the end of this year.

On healthcare.gov it says "There are 4 basic types of qualifying life events... Turning 26 and losing coverage through a parent’s plan"

But on OPM's website I dont see any similar wording... Just the idea of you losing a child and downgrading your plan once they turn 26.

Wondering if FEHB has different qualifying life events than obamacare?

I would sign up at open enrollment. When dealing with OPM I go with safe, not sorry.

My question is why are you still on your parents' insurance if you are 25 years old & a full time federal employee???

Seems pretty straightforward to me... pay $25 a month to stay on my parents plan or $250 a month to get one through FEHB. Yea, I am gonna save that money and get better coverage.

Generational studies have made great strides in the past few years. What they've discovered is pretty enlightening.

Earlier generations valued independence a great deal more than current generations. As a late Gen X'er, I was excited to get my first car that allowed me to get out of the house and away, I looked forward to getting a job so I could afford to take my girl out on a date or to buy that new video game, etc. I'm sure others of my generation and older have similar recollections. Independence to me meant being self-reliant.

One of the things that generational studies have shown is that Millennials don't view independence the same way as previous generations did. Reliance upon parents or others to ease financial burdens or to keep from going into debt isn't considered shameful, rather, it's considered a savvy financial move. In some cases, millenials feel entitled to certain things because they've been given everything they need their entire lives. They often believe that their opinions and feelings hold more importance, relevance and value than how previous generations felt about their own. Independence has taken on a whole new meaning for millenials, more that it means to be "independent of thought, of choice, and of expression" rather than to be self-sufficient and responsible for one's actions.

However, their originality, tech-savvy and multi-tasking skills are unmatched by any generation. Each generation has it's pros and cons.

Seems pretty straightforward to me....millenials are taking way to long to grow up....& their dependence on the collective is going to be their greatest challenge later in life...

Was never intending to make this about age, or millenials vs gen x when I posted this. Was a simple health care question that I was hoping someone who might have expericend this could help out with.

My parents do not care that I am on their health plan; It is not keeping them for retiring or placing any additional burden on them. I am paying whatever additional cost it is to them to keep me on their plan, have been doing so since i graduated college.

Take a look at SF2809. Event Code 1C on page 7, I think, applies to your situation. You should check with your agency's human resources department for verification though.

I was only stating what the research has shown, and generalizations and stereotypes come about because tendencies are noticed in general even if they don't apply to every individual. But you are quite right, this isn't the right place for that discussion. My apologies.

Thanks for finding that. I had looked at that but it seems like it applies more to a parent having one child that turns turn 26 then they want to downgrade to self plus one or self only.

I also looked at the section about dual enrollment but i dont need that because I dont have any children and my wife has her own medical plan.

Thanks for the info though.

No worries, I just have liked this forum because it generally has good intellectual discussions and I dont want to see that degrade to something like the comments section of any news website these days.
