I really don’t think China holds significance in our market. Certainly not enough for me to change the way I invest. Will a deal be struck in the short term? Hard to tell, but I think not making a deal hurts them a lot more than it hurts us. Bottom line, business as usual.

THIS IS THE "ANYTHING GOES" POLITICS THREAD!!!!

Post by Aitrus »

Anybody who wants to debate political stances, bash or defend Trump or the Republicans or the Democrats, or that wants to debate the finer points of the China trade deal or the pros and cons of socialism or capitalism, or want to discuss the upcoming elections...you do it here. Or in another thread of your own making in the Anything Goes section of the forum.

If I find any politically-based post outside the Anything Goes area of the forum after 11 May 2019, it will be moved to this thread.

Use the entirety of the TSP forum as it was designed and we shouldn't have any further problems. That means no dragging discussions off-topic by introducing political themes, issues or opinions into non-political threads.

I support you 100% Aitrus, These partisan political debates are not helpful. They are causing havoc, and not going to make one iota of difference in getting anyone to change their mine.
I support blocking members accounts that don’t comply with the rules.

I just wish both parties would work together and pass a timely 2020 budget and fix all those lingering issues like immigration, that have been around since I was old enough to vote (decades ago)!

This type of thing (this thread) is needed at a lot of websites. Take govexec.com. Read any major article and scroll down to the comments. Almost without fail about 2 or 3 comments in, the discussion devolves into a red hat/blue hat debate and name calling. Nothing on the actual subject of the article. I just quit reading the comments at many of these sites.

Trumps strategy in this trade war seems very strange and contradictory. He tweets that China was beaten so badly in negotiations they want to wait for a new administration to get a better deal. This obviously implies they were getting a bad deal. Then he turns around and tweets they backed out of a "great" deal. Which is it?

Futures pointing to a pretty rough day and I'm guessing it might be rough for a while. I don't know if we are seeing a double top or not but to me it's not worth the risk to find out. Sticking with safety for now.

Well, I expect tspwizard to make this his home. I expected a conclusion to our China Tariffs/Trade Deal, looks like it's gonna be a rough summer. Iran/Tariffs/NKorea/gas prices.

2020 is going to be brutal.

The vast majority of our goods are STILL made in China, despite the last several years of tariffs and protectionism.

And "it hurts them a lot more than it hurts us" isn't true anymore. It used to be. We're still richer than China, but they have 4x the population, slightly more land mass, similar natural resource reserves, and now their population is heavily mobilized in their economy. They control the largest volume of the world's production. We used to be the lion's share of the demand, but demand is way up in China. Almost everything bought and sold in China is made in China. They are building trains, roads, and power plants WAY faster than us.

The only reason Americans think that China somehow desperately "needs us" is that they are blinded by typical American arrogance.

Aitrus,

In your initial post, you mentioned that "If I find any politically-based post outside the Anything Goes area of the forum after 11 May 2019, it will be moved to this thread."

My recommendation is that you do not bother moving anything political, just delete it. Otherwise, you may find that you are spending all day moving comments that are not TSP related rather than spending time where you may really want to.

Just a thought. Thanks for all you do for us.
