2016 57%YTD for ProFunds [Re: TSPBuilder's FantasyTSP Accoun
Greetings Fellow TSP'ers,
So far I'm hitting my 10% per month goal and then some. The year started well with hitting 45% by 3/9/2016. Sat March out because I wasn't finding a good pattern to invest in. Made three consecutive errors in judgement that ran my YTD down to 29.6%. My other goal this year was to make better than my previous62%ytd and keep it. I devised a hypothesis on how to accomplish that and failed. I have some serious doubts about my process but have managed to recapture my losses and today's returns (9.42%) shot me over the 50% hurdle to 57%YTD. There might be hope yet. On the TSP side, I really boo-boo'd early in April and lost out on all the really great gains you all are enjoying. Hopefully May will be kind and allow me to capture some of that but that ride looked to be ending a couple days ago. Hope I am wrong again

Re: TSPBuilder's FantasyTSP Account
Hi evilanne,
I track about 20 leveraged mutual funds that are offered by ProFunds (at ProFunds.com). They are currently waiving all fees for maintenance, No transfer or redemption fees. No waiting "x" number of days between transfers between funds.
If I remember, weren't you looking into brokerages to possibly invest your money in post-retirement? That stuck in my mind because I am looking to do something with ETF's for the other half of my portfolio when I retire but haven't dipped my toe into those waters yet. If I remembered incorrectly, I apologize.

Re: TSPBuilder's FantasyTSP Account
Looks like ProFunds just does Funds I have a regular brokerage account and 3 IRAs outside of TSP that I do want to move somewhere else. I'm considering TDAmeritrade, Fidelity & Schwab, as they seem to be most highly rated and offer research/tools etc; but I need to talk with someone at each re: my portfolio to make sure that there are no issues and to determine which one is a better fit.
I just retired w/VERA earlier this year but not sure when I want to start withdrawing TSP funds (only option is life expectancy calculation) as that will lock me in for close to 8 years whether I do it through TSP or an IRA. At the moment it seems like TSP is the better option based on my research.

First of all, Congratulations on the Retirement!!
Second, please forgive my nosiness but what is "VERA"?
You said "Looks like ProFunds just does Funds " Not sure what that means. They have mutual funds that are taxable and IRA's also.
I am not familiar with the 8 year lock in. Is that when you reach age 62 and that changes your draw rate from IRA's?
I am contemplating retiring a year and 3 months early from the Federal Government and living off the interest of the taxable account or a combination of the TSP that will be rolled-over to a self-directed IRA when I separate. I am leery of financial advisors and CPA's but occasionally touch base with them to see if I am on track but I sense from Crondanet that I need to get more involved with at least a CPA to tell me which place is more tax efficient to pull money from (IRA vs. taxable).
In reference to the brokerage's, I have had a problem with Fidelity because they impose a multiple day stop in-between trades and penalize me for more than one trade per three months in the mutual. Now they are telling me that I need to create a new brokerage account if I want to trade ETF's. I am not happy with the way they seem to impede me from getting where I want to be. I am reading good things about TDAmeritrade. They are touted for having one of the easier platforms for trading for beginner's and have a lot of education and support for them also. They also supposedly have virtual trading (like TSP Center so you can test out your investment strategies before employing them with your money at risk. This new adventure to diversify and protect my portfolio is so much more difficult than what I do at ProFunds but it has the advantage of possibly protecting it from Profunds biggest liability (think 2008 when their funds hit 32 and 72% returns each day for one week and if you are in a fund that is opposite of the performance of the index you could lose all of your investment based on the way I invest). I don't think Schwab carries a good balance of inverse funds so I have eliminated them for my purposes. MerrillEdge is attractive but something is off about them. Need more research.
I'd be interested in hearing your progress. Happy trails
Re: TSPBuilder's FantasyTSP Account
VERA is Voluntary Early Retirement Authority, VSIP is the associated incentive to leave government service early. Currently I'm 51.9, so my options are very limited if I want to access my TSP without any penalties. Prior to 59.5 the only way for me to withdraw funds without penalty is Substantially Equal Periodic Payment (SEPP). TSP exception is based on IRS life expectancy calculation; which if selected, must be for minimum of 5 years or until you turn 59.5, whichever is later. http://www.investopedia.com/articles/re ... 112602.asp

I am envious I am 54.6 and would love if my employer offered a voluntary early retirement (Kudos for you seizing the opportunity!).
So you have a retirement income with no need to withdrawal TSP funds unless you want to supplement a different lifestyle.
Apparently I have caught a major upswing of the ProFunds mutual fund for precious metals (PMPIX). It is leveraged 1.5 times the index (Dow Jones Precious Metals Index at http://www.google.com/finance?q=INDEXDJ ... S_e8ytl-gJ). Yesterday the index was up 4.71%(PMPIX=7.065%) and today it finished at 6.55% (9.825%) to put me at 68.71% year-to-date(YTD). I'm going to try to ride it out for a few days and try not to lose more than 20% when it changes direction.
Hope you have a great weekend.
Re: TSPBuilder's FantasyTSP Account
Wow! It looks like PMPIX has gained 50% in 1 month and over 140% in 3 months. Basic materials are doing well. May you have many high returns
In regard to ProFunds...it looks like it is limited to a variety of funds, but does not include capability to buy/sell individual stocks or funds I currently have in my portfolio outside TSP. I am also concerned with Department of Labor's ruling that is supposed to require financial advisors to look out for clients best interest, however, I think it is going to be costly to investors as they will charge annually a small percentage of the account balance but not charge any commissions. This will apply to accounts managed by broker, not sure if there will be any impact to self directed accounts. If you have large amount invested, that could get expensive in a managed account that may or may not have much trading involved. I want to be able to do some trading in stocks, closed end ETF, but there are some assets that I will continue to hold.
Note: I was editing my prior post while you were posting. I get sidetracked easily at times.
