Re: Please excuse my ignorance.
Don't buy anything, but pure silver and gold bullion for investing purposes is folly IMO. Everything other than pure bullion are numismatics. They're priced based on rarity, demand plus the price of the underlying commodity. The downside is this...you are paying the rarity premium at present in the hopes that the rarity premium goes up. Now, if collecting coins is a hobby, sure do it. But if you're investing in precious metals for a hedge, just buy bullion. Best website and the only one I'd recommend is:
http://www.coloradogold.com/
And the founder there gives solid advice on buying coins:
http://www.coloradogold.com/archive/Num ... s-827.html
Now, if you look for coins live aev does then that makes sense since you're not buying premium. You're buying coins at face value and then selling based on the PM content which is always higher than face value.
Equities will always surpass precious metals long term and they are as volatile as equities.
If you're prepping for doomsday the best advice I can give is investing in yourself. Learn trades like carpentry, electrical, plumbing, welding, etc than can be used. Invest in long term food and water storage for say a 2 year period. I'd rather buy bullets and food than gold when doomsday occurs.

I agree with Skie. Investing in yourself, learning the basics of many trades, water, food, basic first aid, etc. All are prudent and wise things to consider when preparing. Self-sufficiency is important and a trait I fear is lacking in how we are raising our youth today. I just consider silver and gold to be a part of those preparations. I don't hang on to gold and silver as a way to invest, nor do I think anybody should. More of a kind of insurance in case something happens.

All true statements Aitrus and Skie. Also, don't forget jmbullion.com, apmex.com, providentmetals.com, and moderncoinmart.com.
I've also found some good deals using ebay with their various ebucks promotions, along with ebates, and the cash back my cc offers.
Anytime you can buy at or below spot price, it's a good deal.
Just one more thought. I enjoy and value the equities I own but there's nothing like holding the shiny metal in your hands. I view my PMs in much the same way as my insurance policies except I know for certain my PMs will always provide a payment.

Gold is the only asset that maintains its value for millennia, through all different governments and currencies.

Bitcoin is the new precious metal. Only 21 million will ever be made and many will be lost forever. Value will go up forever.
