I fund holders just got fu%^& jobbed today

Post by pdm »

EFA up over 1% and the dollar was flat/down against other currencies. Mathematically impossible..05% GTFO of here.

Not sure if this is the correct threat to ask but can someone tell me why the I-Fund Live Chart here and EFA charts are so inaccurate when compared to our actual gains and losses in the I-Fund?? Today's chart shows +0.58% but our returns were only +0.30%. Not a one-time discrepancy either. Watching the chart at the end of the day means little to indicate true performance. WTH, over.

The "I" fund is kind of unique to its own. EFA and other ETF's are as close as we can get to track the "I" fund. But none of them are exactly the "I" fund. So you will get disparities
I am just an average Joe. I have no clue to what the market will do.

The I fund has a couple of factors that cause it not to match EFA:
1. Currency exchange (i.e. Dollar against the Euro, Dollar against Yen, Dollar against Pound) - all of these are factors in how many dollars you will get with a given gain / loss.
2. Then there is Fair Value Pricing: https://www.tsp.gov/fund-performance/sh ... lculation/ "to prevent traders from benefiting from stale price information"

It would be nice if they would publish a formula for this, but the I fund remains "the man behind the curtain".

The I Fund attempts to match the returns of the MSCI EAFE Index
The EFA ETF attempts to do the same.
Neither contains all the stock of the index.
Do they contain the same stocks? Possibly.
Do they use the same algorithm to achieve their goal? Doubtful.
If you're going to use the I Fund, I think you have 2 options:
1. Track EFA and enjoy playing the guessing game
2. Don't look at it until it's your planned time to leave

So are the returns posted here the EFA returns, or thee TSP I fund true returns? I track EFA and accept that the gains/losses may be a few degrees off, but there's probably not a huge disparity anyway.

EFA seems to be the best way to track it live, but there is always a fair valuation adjustment before the 7PM numbers come out. Sometimes it is rather startling.

If I correctly understand the way that MJ programmed the new site, the Fund prices we see posted are automatically downloaded from TSP at the end of the day, so what we see here is accurate to what TSP tracks. Hopefully he'll chime in and either confirm or deny.

Everything on this website uses the official TSP prices except the "Live" and "Technical" pages, which use similar indexes.

So the green "Fund Prices" table, as well as ALL fantasy data, uses official TSP prices.
