not your dad's stock market

Post by megalush5 »

Just a thought and/or question I would usually pose to Aitrus on DM, but thought I'd post for discussion.
I was always under the impression that the stock market moves up or down with future prognostication that takes into account many economic variables. Some indicators studying months or even years in advance... That seems to be the way of the recent past. Today's markets seem to jump and twitch at a rumor or a policy thought. I think it can be attributed to 24 hour real time data, including news and opinion and social media the Market has never seen up until recently. It feels like the stock market today, on a daily basis, is more reactionary to "real time" events than it ever has been. one tweet from a high profile shareholder can send a stock price up or down in minutes or hours. Lately, I have no choice but to be more hawkish on potential signals that can disrupt the broader market in case i need to make adjustments to my allocations. The market may be changing but my TSP investment strategy can change right along with it.
Much love to TSPCalc for the indispensable data he provides. It is a treasure map to all who seek good fortune! I am just a Mailman with a TSP balance! :D

You're not wrong, megalush. There's a lot of crazy-quick up and down in the market lately. However, as many here can attest, it comes and goes in cycles. There's time of relative market calm, and then times of high volatility. High volatility can make investors jumpy and nervous, which makes the market even more volatile. It's a self-feeding cycle that usually doesn't end until there's a firm move one way or the other.

That's why I like the seasonal approach so much - it allows me to ignore the volatility as I just focus on following the plan. Buy-and-hold has this benefit as well.

I've been sitting in G for awhile now. The balloon is going to pop I don't want to be apart of it.

I've been paying extra close attention since those last inflation numbers came out and came out huge...But I think there's still either some manipulation in those numbers or a lag in what's actual and what's reported!

Now is inflation good for the G fund or F fund? Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought periods of high inflation were good for the G fund...maybe not F but G for sure!

Cheers!

It's good for G if the fed raises interest rates to combat the inflation.

Looking at markets from a historical perspective, they appear to be performing as they always have.

No it’s not. My dad who is boomer age had this game easily beat back then. Invest and collect…Take most of your cash and invest in the stock market. Worked his ass off way more than I do…Millionaires easily at retirement. Will Anyone who is mid 40’s will ever do as well as them….My kids want to know.. I already know… good luck everyone…

But it might be again soon.
Wish we could apply TSPcalc patterns to pre-2004 data, especially 2000-2002 when C, S I had 3 straight negative years.
