2022 TSP- Go Wrong- Stay Wrong?

Post by IRQVET »

So I was trying not to ride the wave (short term earrings) but now I’m stuck in the deeply negative category. Do I cut ties and eat the loss, or ride it out and continue buying shares on the cheap?

I’m 19 years from retirement, talk to me Goose . . .

I say ride it out. You have a long time until retirement and if you look at how far down the S fund is from its 2021 high; this is a good entry point. How many years has the S fund (or C) ended the year at -25%? Not many.

If you move to G fund, then when are you going to move back into stocks? Likely you'll lock in your losses and miss the rebound. I agree with harpole, now is the time to get-in and stay-in.

Ride the wave. Even if it takes 1-2 years; put it in S and forget about it. Market will comeback eventually.

As you are 50/50 G/S, why not wait until you are sure an upturn is underway, then go all in?

I did some Monte Carlo simulations with a downturn in the market for the first 5 years of a 10 year period and I always came out with a larger portfolio balance than if I didn't have a down turn. Anyone else see this? Maybe I am mistaken?
I am just an average Joe. I have no clue to what the market will do.

From 90% S to 89% S IFT today? What's the thinking behind that???

We "were" up well over 1% for the day, so thought why not pocket it. If we continue to go down the following day, then I save 1%.
I may continue to pull 1% on up days for the remainder of May. The trend is still down...

I guess it's like construction; you have to demolish everything first before you build it back better...
