This is a good, lengthy article from Nate Silver basically about how polling works and why it works. Nate Silver is the guy who correctly predicted every state that Obama won in 12, every state but one in 08, and gave Trump a 25% chance to win in 16 while every other model showed him at 1%.

The folks running the polls know what they are doing, even the Fox News polls, which is actually one of the more accurate ones. They have adapted to the technology-age and take into account the fact that fewer people answer phone calls. They don't just ring up 100 people and hope they get a good picture. And they quantify how accurate they are and course-correct as necessary. A lot of very smart people have realized the issues with traditional polling long before you or I did.

"Tucker Carlson Tonight and Hannity were the only shows to break four million viewers, with Hannity just behind Carlson (4.331 million viewers vs. 4.311 million). Fox News had the five top-rated shows overall, including The Five (3.898 million viewers), Special Report with Bret Baier (3.658 million viewers) and The Ingraham Angle (3.622 million viewers). The same five shows—in the same order—led among viewers in the key demo, with Carlson delivering 791,000 viewers, according to ratings data compiled by Nielsen."

I don't know about you, but I think that is significant. Do you think a lot of people are watching news shows that they disagree with? I think that's makes all these polls sound very off.

What do you think, I'm I missing something? Especially like to hear from the liberals here. Please don't start a debate about who is the most "Bad". This is about poll accuracy, related to popularity of news shows.

I get your point and agree that the polls are off (see my prior post) All that the cable news ratings tell us is that Fox has a larger market share when comparing the top 3 cable news networks--over 40% from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. MSNBC is 2nd & CNN comes in last. It appears that when they do interview the President, their number are even higher as on July 9th. I think the negativity and TDS in MSM has turned many people away from the news all together.

Cable News ratings from 9 July https://twitter.com/TVNewsHQ/status/128 ... 88/photo/1
Top 3 shows with percentages below
Fox - Five 3.185 49.0%
CNN . . . . 1.527 23.5%
MSNBC . . . 1.784 27.5%
. . . . . . . . 6.496

Fox - Carlson 4.056 51.5%
CNN - Cooper 1.537 19.5%
MSNBC-Hayes 2.276 28.9%
. . . . . . . . . . 7.869

Fox - Hannity 4.466 45.1%
CNN - Cuomo 1.766 17.8%
MSNBC-Maddow 3.665 37.0%
. . . . . . . . . . . 9.897

The fish rots from the head. I'm sure we'll see even more things come to light. And we all know their defenders are going to be shocked, shocked to hear so many racists were apart of this show and network.

Thanks evilanne. These guys have been running their 3 and 4 man tag team on me for a while. I guess the're going for quantity because of their lack of quality responses.

I like the 536 website but they really were significantly off in the 2016 presidential election. Final odds on election night gave Trump less than 30% chance of winning on the last update I could find: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/20 ... -forecast/ Map shows they were wrong on FL, NC, WI & PA

Labeling Trump supporters as a "basket of deplorables" and shouting them down as "racist, sexist, etc." leading up to the election probably made supporters less forthcoming to pollsters. They even made Pepe the Frog a racist hate symbol   After 3-4 years of constant attacks on Trump, it is getting old.

This is really a bad reading of statistics. If they gave Trump a 30% chance of winning, and he ended up winning, then they weren't "wrong". Reality fell within the 30% window allowed by their model. That's not wrong.
